Valley Services are keeping Dave and his team at James Hargreaves very busy!

Dave Coleman, the manager of James Hargreaves is being kept very busy with 40 to 50 boilers being delivered to our jobs across Derbyshire and South Yorkshire. We are very happy to be working closely with such a great friendly team.

Another happy customer!

“Valley Services was recommended to us by our next door neighbour who could not praise them highly enough.
David Smith, Managing Director of the company, made an appointment to come and talk through the options and give us a quotation.

He talked through our needs in great detail and explained in simple terms the technical areas of the system he would propose. We had fully expected to replace the cylinder as well as the boiler but pleased to say that in his opinion this was not necessary and we are grateful for the saving! The quotation came through by return and a date was set for the installation.

The team turned up precisely on time, started work immediately and didn’t seem to stop until the job had been completed. The electrician, talked through the positioning of various display units and then gave a very professional run through as to how everything worked.
The whole team worked with great enthusiasm and tidied up everything as they went along. It was a pleasure having them in the house.

We will certainly be recommending Valley Services to anyone in the area who is looking to have heating installed.”

Widespread ignorance among Brits of the ‘silent killer in your home’

New research reveals Brits don’t understand symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.

A funny taste in your mouth, diarrhoea and difficulty sleeping are just some of the symptoms that Brits are wrongly associating with carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

New research, launched today by Gas Safe Register to mark Gas Safety Week (10-16 September), has revealed widespread confusion about what the key symptoms are of this potentially fatal gas, which is known as the silent killer.

Despite carbon monoxide being a tasteless, odourless and colourless gas, over half of those questioned thought that a funny taste in the mouth indicated CO poisoning, while a third thought a cough and 29 per cent thought a sore throat.

Other symptoms wrongly associated with CO poisoning include the chills (12.5%), diarrhoea (9.5%), difficulty sleeping (23.2%), ear-ache (8.4%), loss of appetite (27%), a rash (15%), a runny or blocked nose (14.2%) and stomach cramps (16.2%).

Department of Health research showed that around 4,000 people will present themselves at hospital with CO symptoms in a twelve month period. In the last year, there have been more than 50 deaths as a result of CO poisoning, with 16 of those attributable to faulty gas appliances. Now, homeowners are being urged to learn the symptoms and cut the risk by getting their gas appliances safety checked annually and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Low-level CO poisoning can occur when small amounts of CO gradually escape from faulty gas appliances, such as boilers, gas cookers or gas fires, into the air. Despite the dangers posed by CO poisoning, Gas Safe Register has found that 43 per cent of people do not get their appliances checked regularly and 1 in 10 have never had their appliances checked.

Valley Services support Gas Safety Week 2012!

Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, which can be caused by unsafe central heating systems, gas cookers or gas fires. Gas Safety Week which takes place from 10th – 16th September 2012 aims to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances.

Badly fitted and poorly serviced appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions as well as carbon monoxide poisoning. Using an illegal gas fitter can put lives at risk, only a Gas Safe registered engineer should carry out gas work.

The week will highlight to home owners the importance of taking care of their gas appliances and how they can do this by:

  • only using a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • having regular servicing and an annual gas safety check
  • checking the engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card
  • spotting the danger signs of carbon monoxide on gas appliances

Green Deal Installer Application Sent Off! Watch this space!

Valley Services have successfully sent off the application to become a Green Deal Installer!

What is the Green Deal?

The Green Deal is the government’s plan to help you make energy-saving home improvements at no upfront cost.

From October 2012 you will be able to get finance of up to £10,000 to help pay for energy saving measures. Although the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is championing the initiative, it is not a government grant – customers choose to take the Green Deal finance, and will then pay the money back to the finance company with interest.

It means that rather than having to dip into your savings or take out loans to install insulation, solid wall insulation, double glazing or maybe a new boiler, you can take out long-term finance that will be attached to your home.

Barbecue Safety Campaign Catches Light!

In the last year in UK campsites, seven Brits have died from carbon monoxide poisoning and seventeen have been injured by bringing BBQ’s inside tents and enclosed spaces. Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous substance which is created when fossil fuels such as gas and solid fuels like charcoal and wood fail to combust fully due to a lack of oxygen. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it but it can kill quickly with no warning.

Here is some advice for staying safe on holiday:

Never use a barbeque that has been lit (charcoal or gas), gas stove, light or heater in a tent, caravan or cabin, unless it is a permanent fixture that has been installed and maintained correctly. Even if you have finished cooking, your barbeque will still give off fumes for some hours after use.

Place your cooking area well away from your tent. Always ensure that there is adequate supply of fresh air where the barbeque is being used.

Remember the six main signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. If concerned, seek medical advice.

If using a gas appliance, check that the appliance is in good order, undamaged and, where present, that hoses are properly attached and undamaged. Make sure the gas taps or cylinder valve are turned off before changing the gas cylinder and only do this in the open air and away from any ignition sources. Do not over-tighten joints.

Always ask if the gas appliances in your accommodation have been safely checked and serviced.

“A huge thanks to Dave and his team for the fantastic work to transform my bathroom and shower room!”

“Having had a really bad experience with a local builder, I’ve put off getting work on my bathroom, and the house generally, for years. I simply couldn’t face the minefield of trying to find a decent plumber/ builder without getting ripped off again.

I was put in contact with Dave through a recommendation from our local electrician. Although he is based quite a way away, he came out to have a look at my problematic bathroom which was very long but also very narrow and about 20 years out of date. What impressed me straight away was Dave’s obvious passion and his pride in his work. We looked at all sorts of options to try and get a shower in the room. Dave came up with a really good solution and talked me out of some stupid ideas. After follow meetings to make sure we were doing the right thing, I was pleased that Dave could start very quickly.

A couple of weeks later, Dave arrived with his engineers who would complete the work and I have to say the service was fantastic from start to finish. The very first thing they did was cover my beige carpets completely with sticky backed plastic which meant it could be swept and washed down. Each of them was brilliant, worked very hard and cleared up after themselves. Dave was in regular contact and an engineer was always around to keep us up to date at the end of each day.

Within a couple of days, a major problem was uncovered when the engineers started taking down the bathroom ceiling and discovered a serious roof leak. Dave again was fantastic; the guys from Valley spent 4 hours in the howling wind and rain putting a tarpaulin over the roof to stop the rain getting in. Dave sent round a local builder, who fixed the problem very quickly meaning the work on the bathroom could continue. From the start to the finish of the work, Dave checked the work and kept in touch.

I was so pleased with the quality of work and the professionalism of all involved that I asked Dave to look at my showroom which had be bodged by a previous builder. The work required completely stripping out, damp proofing, rebuilding and insulating. The engineers again did a brilliant job- very professional work plus they cleared up each night and cleaned up thoroughly at the end! My shower room is no longer an embarrassment but a warm, dry room I’m proud of.

I now have a bathroom and shower room that wouldn’t look out of place in a design magazine! Plus I know that I have a number to call in an emergency and when I want work done on the house.

Thanks to Dave and everyone at Valley Services for your hardwork and pride in your work. Not only will I be recommending you to others but I’ll be in touch in the future when it’s time for the next job!”

Ms Jones, Holmfirth – Bathroom and Shower Room Installation. July 2012.
